Flora & Fauna
The Murraylands is widely known for its mallee. There are different varieties including ridgefruited mallee and narrow-leaf red mallee. Large horizons of banksia heathlands can be seen in Ngarkat Conservation Park.
The heathlands are a magnet for birds that collect the banksia's nectar. Stay alert, as there's a possibility you may spot a Malleefowl, an intriguing but rare ground-dwelling bird somewhat larger than a domestic hen. Malleefowl, as the name suggests, inhabit the Mallee areas of Australia and are an endangered species. Large patches of unburnt Mallee in South Australian parks provide important habitat for these birds. See the Murraylands birdwatching page for more details.
You may also see the nocturnal Western Pygmy Possum if you're in the park overnight. Other wildlife includes Western Grey Kangaroos, Emus, Echidnas, Goannas and the recently discovered Swamp Wallabies.
