Four-Wheel-Drive
Wind your way through awe-inspiring landscapes, rugged mountain ranges, river red gum-lined gorges and the ever-changing colours of South Australia.
You'll find some of the best desert and coastal tracks in the world here.
We've got tracks like the Simpson Desert crossing between Birdsville and Mount Dare. This 500-kilometre route passes over mountainous red sand dunes and includes the beautiful surrounds and soothing waters of Dalhousie Springs.
Three of Australia's legendary tracks are here: the Birdsville Track, the Oodnadatta Track and the Strzelecki. All can be done in conventional vehicles - but experienced 4WD drivers will be able to take in more of the land that surrounds these old routes. With careful planning and good preparation, these are without a doubt drive journeys of a lifetime.
The Limestone Coast in South Australia's south-east also offers challenging 4WD adventures. Between Robe and Beachport you'll find plenty of tracks with towering sand dunes and great expanses of beach that range from hard-packed and easy, to deep and extreme. Drive from Kingston SE to the Murray Mouth and along the way you'll see the great chain of salt-water lagoons that are the Coorong, huge flocks of waterbirds, gorgeous beaches and tough dunes. The Fleurieu Peninsula is better known for wine-making, farming and forests, however you'll still find some great day-trip 4WD routes here, just south of Adelaide.
Best known for its oysters, Coffin Bay on Eyre Peninsula also has much to offer if you're serious about driving and fishing. In Coffin Bay National Park, see tall, vegetated dunes and Gunyah Beach with its great salmon fishing spots. There are also the gleaming white sands of Seven Mile Beach, where dolphins and seals can often be seen playing in the shallows.
Twenty per cent of South Australia has been set aside for conservation, and well-maintained and marked tracks allow you to explore these spectacular wilderness areas without harming the environment.
Many pastoral families around the Flinders Ranges have established 4WD routes on their properties. Some are pretty tough, but you'll be rewarded with stunning outlooks.
