Regional Museums
Don't miss these South Australian museums. You can ride restored tramcars, clamber over old warships, go underground and much more:
The National Motor Museum at Birdwood houses Australia's most important collection of vintage, veteran and classic motor cars and motor cycles - more than 300 in fact. Can you find your favourite car there?
Ride a restored tramcar along a two kilometre track at beach front St Kilda, Adelaide. The Tramway Museum has operational examples of each type of tram previously used on the Adelaide system and where possible, the line has been built using fixtures actually used in Adelaide.
Whyalla Maritime Museum specialises in naval history. You can explore its prime exhibit, HMAS Whyalla, the first modern warship built in South Australia. Also in Whyalla, visit the Mount Laura Homestead Museum. Step into yesterday's schoolroom, blacksmith shop, workers cottage and more.
The Axel Stenross Maritime Museum in Port Lincoln pays homage to the Finnish-born boatmaker. It's been described as a classic bloke's shed. It is still an operating slip-yard where small craft are cleaned and painted in among a number of historic vessels now at their final home.
Or discover and explore the historic township of Burra with the Burra Heritage Passport. The passport gives you entry to the Burra Mine including dressing tower and lookout, police lockup and stables, Redruth Gaol, Hampton, power magazine, brewery cellars, miners dugouts and smelts paddock.
In Umoona Opal Mine and Museum, experience underground living. The complex is wholly underground and contains a museum of the development of European settlement in Coober Pedy.
And the Mannum Dock Museum is home to the restored Paddle Steamer Marion, built in 1897. Don't miss this slice of Murray River history.
