Four-wheel Driving
Go four-wheel-driving on Limestone Coast beaches.
Few beaches in South Australia have vehicle access however great lengths of the Limestone Coast are open to 4WD vehicles. Beach driving takes you away from the popular beaches and opens up some of the finest surf fishing locations of the region. Beaches have a speed limit of 25km/h and are patrolled randomly.
Off road 4WD vehicles can negotiate slippery, sandy and steep terrain, opening up access to some truly magnificent locations. Trails are marked and should be followed at all times. Not only are they the safest route, sticking to them will lessen the impact on the environment.
Robe to Beachport 4WD
One of the best coastal park areas open to four-wheel-drive vehicles can be found between the Limestone Coast fishing villages of Robe and Beachport. Big white dunes coupled with long sweeps of beach sand rate from hard-packed and easy, to impossibly deep and extreme.
Your journey starts behind Robe at Cape Lannes, in the middle of the steep and vegetated dunes of Little Dip. Between Stony Rise and The Boundary are around 15 kilometres of coastline comprising much of the Little Dip Conservation Park. If you bolt through it'll take around three hours, but you'll miss the sights and sounds. A better bet is to pull up, camp at The Gums or Long Gully among the trees, and explore the park.
To access the Beachport leg there's a short transit hop from The Boundary Track, picking up the gravel road that runs along lakes Eliza and St Clair, turning into the dunes at the Lake George Holiday Resort. Access here is courtesy of the Millicent dune buggy club, so stick to the marked trail.
Next you'll head into the Beachport Conservation Park and the going initially is deceptively easy. The track criss-crosses calcrete 'swales' before being swallowed by the dunes again, the biggest and most mobile of which is Five Mile Drift. The giant wave of sand stands tall among the surrounding dunes and coastline and is popular with drivers wanting to refine their dune skills. Allow two or three days for full appreciation.
