Surfing on the Limestone Coast
You'll find almost every kind of break here, and there are surf spots all the way to the Victorian border. The beaches around Robe and Beachport are a good place to start.
The Robe Easter Classic is testament to the longstanding reputation of the waters of the Limestone Coast for fine surfing. There are superb reef breaks, and you can be guaranteed your own secluded beach. Being the Southern Ocean, you can expect the water to be cold, so a thick full length wetsuit is recommended. The wind kicks up some awesome waves, but the weather can turn nasty quickly, so pick the day carefully. The waters are teaming with aquatic life and you can find yourself amongst seals, dolphins - and the occasional shark.
Posties, east of the original Port MacDonnell Lighthouse, is considered by many to be the best break in the region. It is a powerful, hollow, right hand break which is best in south to south west swells to three metres.
At Cape Northumberland, good waves pick up beyond the outside reef. These waters are unsheltered and can quickly turn dangerous and are best left to skilled surfers.
There is also good surfing either side of Cape Douglas and there is a selection of sand and reef breaks around the Beachport and Southend area for both novice and experienced surfers.
The Beachport surf beach, east of the jetty, offers safe surfing but needs a good steady breeze to lift the waves.
Robe kicks up a left hand break near the boat ramp and there are small but secluded waves off Cape Lannes in Little Dip Conservation Park.
You'll also get large ocean surf at Stoney's Rise.
