Flinders Ranges Drive
A round trip of just over 1000 kilometres starting in Adelaide and heading first to Clare - 135 kilometres, Clare to Melrose - 132 kilometres, Melrose to Quorn - 64 kilometres, Quorn to Hawker - 66 kilometres, Hawker to Parachilna - 89 kilometres, Parachilna to Blinman - 32 kilometres, Blinman to Wilpena - 59 kilometres, Wilpena to Peterborough via Hawker, Carrieton and Orroroo - 196 kilometres, Peterborough to Burra - 85 kilometres, Burra to Adelaide - 156 kilometres.
Head north out of Adelaide to the Flinders Ranges via the Clare Valley wine region. Stop off at the North Star Hotel in Melrose, the oldest town in the Flinders Ranges, for a quiet drink and time to refresh. Take a walk through the stunning landscapes of the Mount Remarkable National Park.
Pass through Quorn, home to the Pichi Richi Railway, the last remaining operating section of the Old Ghan Railway line. Continue onto Hawker and make sure you fill with fuel up here, it's the last major service centre before Leigh Creek.
There's plenty of nature to explore beyond Hawker. Make sure you check out the Brachina Gorge Geological Trail, drop into the Prairie Hotel for some 'feral food, the breathtaking views from Angorichna and take a scenic flight over Wilpena Pound.
You'll need a couple of days to fully appreciate the Flinders Ranges:
- Hike along any of the walking trails throughout Wilpena Pound
- Horse ride through Rawnsley Park Station
- Walk to Blinman Falls from Angorichna
- Enjoy the magnificent landscapes along the Moralana Scenic Drive
- Drop into Arkaroo Rock, Bunyeroo Gorge and check out the Cazneaux Tree
