Adelaide, the Green City

The City of Adelaide has earned a well-deserved 'green' reputation, with a large number of environmentally-friendly initiatives and visitor experiences.

When visiting Adelaide there are a number of things you too can do to support the City's sustainability.

• Take a 'Green' City Tour
Visit and learn about the 'green' sites and initiatives of the City of Adelaide with one of the State's professional tour guides. On this tour, you'll visit the Botanic Gardens of Adelaide, the Adelaide Central Markets, the South Australian Museum's Bio-Diversity Gallery, the Adelaide Zoo and more.  For more information on these tours please contact the South Australian Tourist Guides Association 0419 861 320 or About South Australia on 0418 823 749.

• Travel on Tindo, the world's first solar- powered electric bus
Adelaide City Council's bus, Tindo is the perfect way to get around the City.  Tindo can hold up to 42 passengers in air-conditioned comfort and because it doesn't have a combustion engine, it is a very quiet, zero emissions vehicle. Tindo runs daily as part of the FREE Adelaide Connector Bus service, plus it offers wireless internet access for travelling passengers, making it an extremely convenient way for visitors to see the city.
• Explore the City by bike for FREE!
Grab a bike and ride around the Adelaide city centre for an hour with free city bike hire.  Adelaide has a number of bike paths located throughout the Adelaide Park Lands and the streets of Adelaide and it is a great way to experience all the City has to offer. Adelaide City Bikes are free to hire between 9am - 5pm from Bicycle SA. Hire includes the use of a helmet and if required bicycle lock. And you'll find bike maps at Transport SA's website.

• Visit the Adelaide Central Market - the largest undercover produce market in the southern hemisphere and Australia's longest operating market.
It may be Australia's oldest, but when it comes to sustainability, this market is well ahead of its time. A plan to install solar panels at the Adelaide Central Market will help make it one of the least carbon intensive commercial sites in the central business district.  New recycling procedures already introduced have enabled traders to reduce waste going to landfill by 85%, and they sell some of the best produce in the State, so why not indulge just a little…

• Stay Green
A number of Adelaide's accommodation providers are showing a strong commitment to sustainability. Many environmentally-aware establishments are aiming to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions through a strong focus on operating practices including commitments to improved recycling initiatives and reducing water and energy consumption. • Green Events
Many of Adelaide's attractions and conference and event facilities are also leading the way in sustainability. The Adelaide Convention Centre offers a range of sustainable meeting packages and has been awarded Green Globe Silver and Climate Action Innovator status for their efforts to minimise the environmental impact of their business. The Adelaide Event and Exhibition Centre is one of the world's greenest event venues being 100% sufficient on its own water and electricity sources.  In fact, it's an official Solar Power Station - currently the largest urban solar power project in Australia, with a power generating capacity of 1 megawatt.

On Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 February 2010, the South Australian Clever Green Conference and Showcase will be held at the Adelaide Convention Centre, showcasing the many South Australian products and services that are helping the world to be cleaner and more environmentally sustainable, as well as opportunities to hear internationally recognised speakers on investment and global trends in the CleanTech sector.  Visit the Clever Green Conference and Showcase website for more details and registration.
