Whale Watching At Head Of Bight

Head of Bight is on South Australia's remote far West Coast and famous for its land based viewing of the magnificent Southern Right Whales.

Please note: the Head of Bight viewing platform is currently closed, and new managers hope to be open for the whale season in May 2008. Stay tuned for further details.

Few other locations in Australia provide such a great viewing opportunity without impacting on the whales. Other species occasionally seen from the viewing platforms include Australian Sea lions and the Great White Shark. The location provides views of the Bunda Cliffs to the west and giant sand dunes and long beaches to the east.

Whales are seen between May and October. Southern Right Whales migrate from Antarctica to these warmer waters during winter. Their primary purpose while here is to breed and mate. While visiting the Head of Bight you will see mothers, calves and males.

The Great Australian Bight Marine Park lies next to Head of Bight. This area is managed for the conservation of whales the Australian sealion, marine and other animals. The conservation agreement is important for maintenance of biodiversity of benthic (bottom dwelling) species.

Head of Bight offers fantastic views with or without whales. It is a peaceful location that provides for driver and passenger a relaxing break and stunning views.

Head of Bight is located adjacent to the Yalata Indigenous Protected Area. Land Management Officers. The land management priorities for this area are for conservation and maintenance of biodiversity, in addition to the sustainability of indigenous culture. The land management officers manage 400,000 hectares of land, which includes Head of Bight.

Yalata Land Management Officers manage the IPA in accordance with International Union for the Conservation of Nature guidelines.
