About Limestone Coast

drag onto travel planner

It took nature 26 million years to make this holiday destination.
Good things take time to make. And great things take a long time to make. For 25 million years, the Limestone Coast was submerged between the Southern Ocean, its landscapes shaped and sculpted by the forces of the ocean currents and the subtle movements of the continents themselves.

Then, when the sea retreated to its present level a mere one million years ago, it left behind a bed of fertile soil ideal for agriculture and winemaking, such as the "terra rossa" soil at Coonawarra.

It left behind perfectly sculpted beaches and bays for watersports, surfing and fishing, including Kingston SE, Robe and Beachport.

It also created the magnificent volcanic crater lakes at Mount Gambier, and the magnificent system of subterranean caves and sinkholes at Naracoorte.

It took a long time for nature to produce the Limestone Coast. But, when you see the result, you'll have every reason to think that it was worth the wait.

A natural place to get away from it all
Nowhere is the delicately-crafted natural balance of the Limestone Coast's environment more evident than Coorong National Park, the place where the coast and the Murray River meet.

You'll see lagoons and lakes set among the scrubland, areas filled with native birds and wildlife. The Coorong's stretches of sandy coast also provide you with the perfect setting for four-wheel driving, fishing, camping, and picnics.

A natural place to indulge your palate
The rich soil on the Limestone Coast has given the region's winemakers everything they need to produce some of the best drops you'll ever taste.

Wine regions such as Coonawarra, Padthaway, and Mount Benson are established on the world scene, while Wratonbully is gaining a reputation as one of the most promising emerging wine regions in the country.

So, while you're in the area, be sure to drop in at a cellar door, and taste some of these world-class wines for yourself.
