The perfect appetiser to this ancient region is the Wadlata Outback Interpretive Centre in Port Augusta. It's a must for every visitor to South Australia's big backyard. There are hands-on displays throwing a fascinating light on everything from Aboriginal Muda to pioneering feats and the living landscape.
Botanical buffs shouldn't miss Port Augusta's award-winning Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden, with 12 kilometres of walking tracks and a plethora of amazing flora that grows nowhere else in the world.
And then it's time to get out there - to the delightful Pichi Richi Railway which takes you on a heartwarming journey past gorges and gum trees. See the tiny township of Quorn, which seems to boast a majestic old pub on every corner. And then it's on to Hawker, the Aboriginal art of Yourambulla Caves, to hearty meals in the woolshed at Rawnsley Park, and the high peaks and higher spirits of this breathtaking region.
