River, Lakes & Coorong
The Fleurieu Peninsula offers you the might Murray River and the remarkable Coorong.
The Murray River weaves its way through the Fleurieu Peninsula, as does the Coorong - a string of remarkable wetlands that's an important wildlife habitat. The Coorong is a protected coastal reserve less than 4 kilometres wide but 145 kilometres long. Its shimmering, shallow lagoons are in stark contrast to the rugged southern coastal environment. Read more about the Coorong National Park, including camping and visiting permits.
The Fleurieu Peninsula also boasts scenic towns like Goolwa, with both ocean and lakeside frontages. Goolwa stands at the mouth of the Murray River on Lake Alexandrina. You can swim, fish, cruise, ski or explore in craft that range from sea kayaks to elegant riverboats. Hire a yacht or powerboat, or a canoe to explore the Clayton Bay - Dunns Lagoon canoe trail.
Goolwa is synonymous with wooden boats and its biennial Wooden Boat Festival has become a centre of the wooden boat culture in Australia.
Or visit Hindmarsh Island, a river bound island connected by a bridge from Goolwa. Here, you'll find cruises into the Coorong National Park, boat and skippered yacht charters. There is a range of accommodation available too.
