Historic Trains
In South Australia's spectacular Flinders Ranges, the 40-kilometre long Pichi Richi Railway offers one of Australia's greatest heritage train experiences.
The trains travel through deep rock cuttings, along superb stone wall embankments, and across high iron bridges, in the scenic Pichi Richi Pass. Heritage trains depart from Port Augusta and Quorn.
Built in the late 1870s, this historic railway was once a vital lifeline to Central Australia which included the famous Ghan passenger train. Today's Afghan Express from Port Augusta to Quorn relives the exciting era of the 1920s and 1930s. The popular Pichi Richi Explorer operates a shorter 2.5 hour 32 kilometre return trip between Quorn and Woolshed Flat.

For a behind-the-scenes look at the railways workshops at Quorn, tours are conducted by arrangement.
Don't miss the Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre in Peterborough. A large collection of locomotives, carriages, and freight rollingstock can be found on display in the last remaining major roundhouse in South Australia - and one of the last of these unique rail structures in Australia.
See the only triple-gauge turntable left in the world, and marvel at the magnificently restored carriages - right down to the beautifully carved wood trimmings and ceilings, the vintage lounge car with its leather lounges, and sleeping cars that once travelled across the Nullarbor Plain.
Personally escorted site tours provide a wonderful insight into railway operations of a bygone era.
