Get back to nature in Flinders Ranges and Outback.
Wedge-tailed Eagle, South Australia
This is home to the timid Yellow-Footed Rock Wallaby, the proud Red Kangaroo, fascinating lizards like the Lake Eyre Dragon, and the majestic Wedge-Tailed Eagle.

But this is also an ancient landscape, with stories beginning millions of years ago.

The Flinders Ranges is one of the oldest mountain ranges on earth. So when you're here, take time to dwell on the geological significance of the region. In Brachina Gorge, discover 600 million years of history including the formation of the ranges and the evolution of early life forms as you experience the 20km self-guided Brachina Gorge geological trail.

In Port Augusta, you'll find the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden, with its beautiful, hardy but delicate, arid land flora, bird and animal life. There are 12 kilometres of walking tracks for you to explore through this 250 hectare property. The garden is committed to research, revegetate, preserve and conserve arid land flora and animal life and to show you what you can grow in your garden.

One of the garden's features is Australia's largest Eremophila Garden, which contains more than 120 species, many of which are rare or endangered. There are also two bird hides with interpretive signage and plenty of seats placed along the many walking tracks.

You can find out more about nature in the region, when you read our National Parks pages.
