Great Ocean Road to Port Macdonnell

drag onto travel planner

The Great Ocean Road is one of the world's great coastal drives and one of the most spectacular journeys into South Australia. It snakes its way along the southern Australian coastline, offering dramatic coastal views, and brings you to South Australia's Limestone Coast.

Just five kilometres from the South Australian border at Nelson, the Glenelg River offers the chance to waterski, go canoeing or drop a line off a private jetty at one of the secluded riverside campsites.

Nearby Piccaninnie Ponds is a freshwater spring system and one of Australia's fines cave diving sites. The spectacular limestone chasm is 100 metres deep and the massive chambers of The Cathedral are awe inspiring. If you're not keen to take the plunge, good views of this natural phenomenon can be enjoyed across the sandhills on the beach, where soaks bubble fresh springwater from the sand.

Head to Port Macdonnell, the southern rock lobster capital of Australia.  The quality of fishing is hard to ignore and the maritime museum traces the port's colourful history.

Nature lovers will want to trek through the Germein Wetlands, and also visit Dingley Dell, which poet Adam Lindsay Gordon made his home and inspriation in the 1860s.
