Murray River
It's part of the world's fourth largest river system, a system with a catchment area that covers one-seventh of this huge continent's landmass. And the best bits of it are in South Australia.
The Murray River is an Australian icon. More than a hundred years ago, paddle steamers used to venture up and down the length of the river, transporting agricultural produce from riverside townships.
While the age of the paddle steamer trade has gone, the river towns (and a few of the steamers themselves) remain.
These towns make the perfect starting point for a holiday on the river.
Whether you're into high-energy watersports like waterskiing or jet boating, or prefer more laidback choices like a leisurely holiday on a houseboat, or a spot of fishing, the wide expanses of the Murray are the perfect playground for you.
