River Fishing
Come to the Murray River for relaxing and picturesque fishing spots. You can fish from the back of houseboats, fishing boats, jetties - or the banks of the river itself.
The elusive Murray Cod is the prized catch - it can grow to more than 1.8 metres long and weigh more than 100 kilograms, and is usually found in deep water near fallen logs. The Murray Cod is partial to natural baits like yabbies, baitfish or witchetty grubs; however they're renowned for being hard to catch and stories of 'the one that got away' are common.
Silver Perch, catfish and Murray River crayfish are protected and must be returned to the water immediately after being caught. European Carp, Mosquito Fish and Redfin are non-native fish - it is illegal to return them to the river or to transport them live.
Yabbies are best in the warmer months and often caught in backwaters and in deep water. Hoop nets are relatively inexpensive and suit most conditions - a punctured tin can can also be just as effective.
