Port Adelaide
Explore the Port
Port Adelaide is the historic maritime heart of South Australia and it's here that you'll find the South Australian Maritime Museum. You can climb aboard a full-scale copy of a sailing ketch, or take a nostalgic look at our sun, sea and surf antics of yesteryear. The Bond Stores in Lipson Street act as the museum's main gallery. Just a short walk away, you'll find the Lighthouse, built in 1869. Climb the spiral staircase and take in the views of the port.
Also in Port Adelaide, the National Railway Museum offers you a chance to experience a style of train travel that is no longer available today. There are more than 100 exhibits within two huge pavilions and an 1870s heritage listed good shed. In nearby Semaphore, take a coastal train ride on the Semaphore and Fort Glanville Tourist Railway, regularly departing near the jetty from around 11am during the school holidays.
See children's toys that date back as early as the 1890s at the Australian Museum of Childhood. Discover the fads and trends of children at play. And don't miss the South Australian Aviation Museum, where you can take the controls of the Aero Commander, activate a Lincoln Bomber propeller and climb aboard a Dakota C47.
Surrounded by the magnificent buildings and streetscapes, it's easy to see why Port Adelaide became South Australia's first listed heritage area.
