Northern Flinders
Everything about the northern Flinders Ranges is spectacular - the Aboriginal culture, the colours, the starry skies, the bounding kangaroos, and the rugged peaks at sunset.
It's big and bold, but it can also be intensely personal. Because at every turn there's a friendly local waiting to show you the way - to share their knowledge on the best 4WD tracks, the creation of the landscape, the rich fauna and the rare flora.
At the spectacular Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary, the Sprigg family runs tag-along tours over some of the most challenging 4WD tracks in Australia. Doug, an expert on everything from geology to astronomy, will also reveal the mysteries of the night sky in one of the best equipped observatories in the country.
At Iga Warta, the Coulthards share their Adnyamathanha culture (both traditional and contemporary) on a series of guided walks, overnight camps and cultural tours.
The creation of the Flinders Ranges can also be explored on the Aboriginal Dreaming Trail, a two day, self-drive round trip that includes the Aboriginal communities of Nepabunna and Iga Warta. Brochures are available at major attractions and visitor information centres.
