Coober Pedy
The frontier town of Coober Pedy, grandly known as the opal capital of the world, is home to some 4000 residents from 50 countries. Coober Pedy produces most of the world's opals and you can try your luck at noodling (fossicking) at various spots around town.
Half the population lives underground to escape high summer temperatures in summer. Here, you'll also be amazed to find an underground church, underground hotels and a golf course without a blade of grass. Go on a tour of underground homes and opal mines, an art gallery and potteries. You can tag along with the famous Outback Mail Run to Oodnadatta and William Creek, or join a nightly star gazing tour.
Nearby, discover great landscapes like the Breakaways, Moon Plains and the longest fence in the world, the 5300 kilometre Dog Fence which was built to protect sheep from the dingo, Australia's native dog.
Andamooka, Mintabie and Roxby Downs
Side-trips will take you to the opal-mining towns of Andamooka and Mintabie, Roxby Downs and nearby Olympic Dam - one of the world's biggest mines.
