Regional Art Galleries
Barossa
The Barossa Regional Gallery is home to the Barossa Vintage Festival Collection, Community Art in Fabric, regularly changing temporary and touring exhibitions of paintings and sculptures, and space for paintings by Barossa artists.
Clare Valley
Local art galleries in Clare Valley include:
- Burra Art Gallery, in the beautiful Old Post Office & Telegraph Station, featuring the talent of many local artists, and the priceless works of colonial artist S T Gill
- Ian Roberts's Medika Gallery, housed in the former Lutheran church in Blyth
- Roger Murcott's bird studies at the old mine manager's house in Kapunda
- Murray Edwards's delightful mud brick studio in Watervale, overlooking vineyards, gullies and hills
- Kapunda Community Gallery, Balaklava Courthouse Gallery and Burra Art Gallery all host travelling exhibitions.
Eyre Peninsula
The Port Lincoln Civic Centre has two galleries - the Walter Nicholls Memorial Gallery and the Rotary Gallery - and a popular gallery shop. Ceduna Arts and Cultural Centre has a wide range of Aboriginal art, including original paintings, quality didgeridoos, boomerangs and gifts.
Fleurieu Peninsula
The Fleurieu Peninsula Biennale is one of South Australia's biggest visual arts events, hosting numerous exhibitions and art prizes in wineries, galleries and other venues during November in even-numbered years. The Fleurieu Peninsula links 19 galleries, studios and workshops across the region - look for the trail brochure at visitor information centres and for the purple flag flying outside participating venues.
Flinders Ranges and Outback
South Australia's oldest paintings are probably the rock art of the Adnyamathanha people in the Flinders Ranges. You can see them on an art tour at Iga Warta or at Yourambulla Caves, south of Hawker. Visit Aboriginal artists in their communities - there are several art-focussed tours that go to the APY Lands by 4WD or plane.
The Port Pirie Regional Art Gallery hosts changing displays of contemporary and historical visual art and craft. It has a particular emphasis on promoting the work of South Australian regionally based artists.
Kangaroo Island
Kangaroo Island Gallery and Jenny Clapson Gallery in Kingscote and KI Artworks at Baudin Beach exhibit and sell only Island-made works - a real opportunity to take an original piece of the Island home with you.
Limestone Coast
Naracoorte Art Gallery was the former home of a much loved early medical practitioner. Its collection is made up of more than 60 etchings by famous engraver John Goodchild, an Aboriginal print collection and various other large and small oils, prints and watercolours. The former Kings Theatre in Mount Gambier is now Riddoch Art Gallery, which displays paintings by colonial artists including Eugene Von Guerard and George French Angas, who were here well before a city was established.
Murraylands
The Murray Bridge Regional Gallery has two permanent galleries where you can see a range of contemporary and traditional art and craft exhibitions.
Riverland
Loxton's old fire station now shows the work of local artists and potters in the Terrace Gallery.
Yorke Peninsula
Ascot Theatre Gallery features artworks acquired through the biennial Cornish Festival Art competitions and host many travelling exhibitions.
