Riverland Fishing
Pack the tackle and head for the Riverland to fish in Australia's greatest river, the Murray.
There's a wide variety of catches, of which yabbies and callop are the most popular. Yabbies are best in the warmer months and often caught in backwaters and in deep water. Hoop nets are relatively inexpensive and suit most conditions - a punctured cat food tin can also be just as effective. A simple hand line is all you'll need to catch callop, also called golden perch or yellow belly. They tend to stay below overhanging willows, among fallen timbers and along clay banks.
A number of fishing regulations are in force to protect our precious supply of fish. Some fish species are protected, others have closed seasons. Be aware that size and bag limits apply for some species, so find out before you fish.
Silver perch, catfish and Murray River crayfish are protected species and must be returned to the water immediately after being caught. European carp, mosquito fish and redfin are non-native fish - it is illegal to return them to the river or transport them alive.
Read more about fish species and restrictions at the Primary Industries recreational fishing pages.
You can buy fishing bait and tackle in most Riverland towns, while in Barmera be sure to call into Barmera Disposals and Auto Mart for all your fishing and camping needs.
