Fruit Fly and Phylloxera

The Riverland is one of Australia's main producers of citrus, stone fruits and wine grapes. To help keep the region (and South Australia) free from fruit fly and Phylloxera, quarantine regulations are enforced on the Victorian and South Australian border at Yamba. Please deposit fruit, vegetables and plants in the bins provided at the borders and entrances to the Riverland. Fines up to $20,000 are applicable for failing to comply.

South Australia is the only state in Australia to remain free from Phylloxera - plant lice that destroy grapevines and vineyards. If you've been driving or walking in any soil in an interstate vineyard, please thoroughly clean your car and shoes before entering South Australia. For more information visit the Phylloxera website.

Fire Information
All wood fires or solid fuel fires are prohibited between 15 October to 15 April. Gas fires are permitted except on days of total fire bans. For the latest information on fire restrictions please visit the Country Fire Service "fire restrictions" web pages. Wood fires are permitted outside the fire danger period. However, to ensure fires are used safely and to minimise their impact on the environment do the following:
  • Keep your campfire small
  • Bring your own firewood
  • Use dead fallen wood only
  • Dig a shallow pit (30 centimetres ) for the fire in a cleared area, three metres away from vegetation, trees and tree roots
  • Use existing campfire places where provided.

Please ensure your fire is completely extinguished before you leave or go to bed. An unattended or smouldering fire can quickly become a wildfire.

Camping Tips and Permits
Visitors can camp in parks along the river and all other parks, except Bulyong Island, are accessible by vehicle. However to camp in some parks you will require a permit. For details call the South Australian Department of Environment and Heritage Riverland office on +61 8 8595 2111 or see our Parks Passes page. Please note, it is advised you do not camp directly under the branches of a River Red Gum as branches may fall.

Water preservation
While you're on holiday in South Australia, we need you to help us preserve our precious water. You can do this by keeping your showers short (less than five minutes), washing boats or vehicles with a bucket instead of a hose, cleaning fish in basins rather than running water, and adhere to any water restrictions that may apply during your holiday. For more information, please visit the Watercare website.

Personal Protection Program
South Australians enjoy a very safe environment and you can play your part in reducing crime. When travelling, close your vehicle windows and conceal all valuables including your purse, handbag, shopping, phone and laptop. When parking, lock your vehicle and don't leave your keys where they can be found.

If you notice anything unusual or anyone acting suspiciously, report it to the police. Phone 131 444 for police assistance or 000 for emergencies. If you have information relating to a crime, contact BankSA Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
