Surfing on the Yorke Peninsula

drag onto travel planner

Yorke Peninsula's surf is rapidly becoming well known on the world stage, with many major surfing and body boarding competitions held here. Beginners should take heed of the potentially dangerous nature of some of the breaks. Take care in remote areas and seek advice from the locals.

Chinaman's - Innes National Park
A hollow, very powerful left-hand reef break of excellent quality, complete with hair-raising take-offs and a sharp, shallow ledge. This is a break that is definitely for experienced riders only. It's best at low to medium tide in north or north-westerly winds and a one to three metre swell. It occasionally produces a right hander.

Ethel Wreck - Innes National Park
A summer break only. Fickle but can be good. Usually a powerful right-hander up to two metres. It is best on low to medium tide and north-easterly winds.

West Cape - Innes National Park
A left (occasionally right-handed) beach break of up to two metres.  Best on north or northwest winds and low to medium tide.

Pondalowie Bay - Innes National Park
Very good quality combination beach/reef break.

Richards - Innes National Park
About 250 metres north of the main break at Pondalowie. A good quality beach/reef combination right-hander that breaks up to 1.5 metres. Best on east /north-east wind, low to medium tide.

Trespassers
Outside Innes National Park near Point Margaret, Trespassers can be reached by the Corny Point Road. A good quality right-hand reef break up to three metres. Tresspassers is very powerful, for experienced riders only. Best on easterly winds and low to medium tide.

Baby Lizards
Just north of Point Margaret in Formby Bay. Can get good but is generally only an average quality, short right-hand reef break up to two metres. Best on easterly winds with a medium to high tide.

Rock Pool
Located just south of Daly Head. A powerful right-hand reef break up to three metres and bigger. Best on north-west winds on any tide.

Salmon Hole
A good quality right-hand semi-point break up to two metres. Long, hollow and fast. Best on north-westerly winds and low to medium tide. Located just south of Daly Head.

Daly Head
An average to good quality left and occasional right-hand reef break up to four metres. Best on south-east to easterly winds and low to medium tide.

Spits
Located just north of Daly Head, an average quality left-hand semi-point break up to two metres. It has been reported to have a vicious rip at times. Best on south-west to south-east winds.

Cutloose Yorke's Surfing Classic
This is South Australia's most prestigious surfing event, and held on the October long weekend each year in Innes National Park.
