Walking Trails
Stretch your legs and take in some fabulous Yorke Peninsula scenery and heritage on these walking trails:
Barkers Rocks Walking Trail
Between Barkers Rocks and Port Rickaby, this five kilometre trail takes about two hours each way and features a pristine coastal reserve with great coastal views.
Edithburgh Environmental Walk
This walk snakes its way for four kilometres from Edithburgh to Sultana Point. It's an easy walk with a beach or clifftop option and wheelchair access. There is also a five kilometre walk that takes you right along the coast to Coobowie. On a clear day you can see the Adelaide Hills.
Kadina, Moonta and Wallaroo Town Walking Trails
The walking trails gives an insight into the history of these towns and their many old buildings. In each town the self-guided tours take about an hour. Brochures are available from The Farm Shed Museum and Tourism Centre or local council offices.
Minlaton Walking Trail
This trail starts and finishes at Harvest Corner Visitor Centre, before heading to the HJ Cook Fauna Park, and then along the outskirts of the town. Signs provides information about the River Red Gums and the early settlement of the area, which was known as Gum Flat.
Moonta Mines Walking Trails
Explore this historic copper mining area on one of three marked trails, Ryans Walk, Hancocks Walk and Hughes Walk. Each walk takes around one hour, and interpretive signs illustrate the geology of Moonta ore bodies and the mining methods used to work them.
Stansbury Coastal Trail
Start at the Foreshore Caravan Park and allow about an hour for this easy walk. At low tide the shallow waters and sand flats alongside the trail are home to graceful black swans and pelicans. Interpretive signs give details on the birdlife found along the trail.
Port Vincent Walking Trail
This gently undulating trail runs through native scrub on the Water Reserve on the northern boundary of Port Vincent. It features a wooden bridge and about 40 species of native vegetation. Entry is north of the marina development.
Port Victoria Geology Trail
This trail runs south from the jetty to Rifle Butts Beach and highlights include volcanic action from nearly 2000 million years ago. Allow about two hours for this easy three kilometre walk. An excellent guide book that explains in detail the sites and geological features is available from the foreshore kiosk.
Port Broughton Historic Walking Trail
The history of Port Broughton is revealed as you walk around this small coastal town. Along the way you will visit some historic landmarks and walk along the golden shores of Port Broughton bay, discovering dazzling water views. Come and read the interpretive signs about Port Broughton's past and present along the trail.
Walking Trails in Innes National Park
- Browns Beach to Gym Beach - High sand-dunes, good range of birdlife and delicate wild orchids in spring. Four hours return.
- Dolphin Beach to Royston Head - Spectacular views of the rugged peninsula and Southern Ocean, especially from the lookout at Royston Head. Ninety minutes return.
- West Cape Lighthouse - Starts from West Cape car park and follows the cliff edge to the lighthouse. 40 minutes return.
- Cape Spencer - Fantastic views of Althorpe and Kangaroo Islands from the lighthouse. 15 minutes return.
- Inneston - A well-marked trail meanders through the old gypsum-mining area, with interpretive signs that tell the story of the early days. One hour return.
- Thomson-Pfitzner Plaster Trail - Start from Inneston or Stenhouse Bay. Follows the old wooden rail line. 16 interpretive signs take walkers back in time. Fifty minutes one way.
