McLaren Vale Wine Region

McLaren Vale is a favourite South Australian wine region and has more than 70 cellar doors. The region’s warm climate means it produces great Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.

Other varietals include Tempranillo, Viognier, Marsanne, Rousanne, Barbera and Sangiovese. It's less than an hour from Adelaide city. McLaren Vale also has stunning beaches and magnificent food.

Gourmet meal, McLaren Vale, South Australia

D’Arenberg’s cellar door is set on a hilltop in a nineteenth century homestead. Its popular d’Arry’s Verandah Restaurant serves mouth-watering cuisine. All grapes are basket pressed, with reds fermented using traditional foot treading.

Cellar doors

Visit Coriole Vineyard’s cellar door in an old, ironstone barn. Taste reserve wines and back vintages in the wine room. Have lunch in the courtyard from Friday through to Monday.

Fox Creek Wines makes three popular Shiraz wines: Reserve Shiraz, Short Row Shiraz and Red Baron Shiraz. Taste wine in the cosy, nineteenth century stone cottage. Have a picnic in the beautiful gardens by the lake. Children will enjoy playing in the biplane sculpture and going on the treasure hunt.

Make a day of it

Penny’s Hill is inviting, with casual, farm charm. Relax on the couches inside or soak up the sun on a deck chair. Try Shiraz, Merlot, Chardonnay, Almond Liqueur and more. Meet the Rhode Island red chickens and Black-faced Suffolk sheep. Play petanque on the lawns, while enjoying the wine and tapas.

Taste a range of vintage wines and exclusive volume releases at Wirra Wirra’s cellar door. Try a cheese platter while admiring the view. Wirra Wirra is family friendly, with toys and games to keep children entertained.

More than great wines

Enjoy panoramic views over the Onkaparinga Valley at Chapel Hill. Set within an old stone church, Chapel Hill is adjacent to Onkaparinga National Park. The cellar door sells a variety of wine, from Shiraz and Sangiovese, to Verdelho and Tawny Port.

If you prefer beer, visit Red Poles Restaurant & Gallery. Local craft beer & cider producer McLaren Vale Beer Company hold tastings of their award winning range here, including VALE/ALE. Tours of their Willunga Brewery can also be organised.

Goodieson Brewery is another in the region and produces pale ale, stout and a wheat beer. At Ekhidna Wines, try apple cider, dark or pale ale among other brews.
