A feast for your eyes and appetite
Driving from Hahndorf to Birdwood via Woodside and Lobethal is a visual and culinary feast. There’s cheese, wine and beer to sample, chocolates to devour and orchards laden with fruit. Linger over a winery lunch or browse for antiques. Set aside enough time to reminisce about your first car at Birdwood’s National Motor Museum.
Start with a coffee at Mount Lofty Summit and head to the picturesque Chain of Ponds. The roads on this route are stunning. It’s classic Hills’ motoring. Before you head off, enjoy panoramic views of Adelaide from the summit. On your driving trip, admire the region’s gardens, cuddle animals and take in the views over lunch, before arriving at Chain of Ponds.
Weirs, wines and wetlands
The township of Chain of Ponds was demolished in the 1970s to protect water quality in the nearby reservoir. The five-star rated winery and its elegant world class wines were mercifully preserved.
Wetlands, trails and Hills’ history dominate the Mount Barker to Jupiter Creek drive. Teeming with wildlife, Mount Barker’s Laratinga Wetlands is one of Australia’s most successful artificial wetlands.
Take your bike and stop off for a ride through Kuitpo Forest before refuelling at a bakery. In Echunga, revisit Adelaide Hills’ gold rush days, with a walk along the Heritage Trail to Jupiter Creek Goldmine.
Enjoy the winding roads from the garden village of Stirling, to historic Hahndorf before indulging in lunch on the deck at the stunning Bridgewater Mill.
The Adelaide Hills is also featured in two self drive itineraries - Best of Adelaide and surrounds and the Great South Australia Wine and Food drive. Why not try them both?
