Adelaide Hills Parks and Wildlife
Rich in natural beauty
Thanks to a cool climate and healthy rainfall, the Adelaide Hills change dramatically with every season. There are the blooms in spring, colours of autumn and the lush greenery of winter. Explore the shady trails and cool valleys in summer. Whenever you visit, you’ll see something different.
Enjoy a family day out at Cleland Wildlife Park, Belair National Park or Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary. There are more than 130 species of wildlife to admire and animals to feed and hold.
You’ll be spoilt for choice
Take guided dawn and dusk walks to watch endangered native mammals in their natural habitat. Disappear down walking trails, wander around wetlands or cook a barbecue and sip wine under the big blue sky. There’s a network of trails to suit casual or serious walkers, mountain bike riders and horse riders.
Snaking through the conservation parks, you’ll head into native bushland and along steep gorges to spectacular waterfalls. Enjoy the stunning views of Adelaide city.
Walk the Heysen Trail
Our most famous trail is the 1200 kilometre Heysen Trail, stretching north from coastal Cape Jervis to Parachilna in the Flinders Ranges.
On the city fringe, the 54 kilometre long Yurrebilla Trail is a cultural and environmental discovery walk, linking Belair National Park to Black Hill Conservation Park.
Head to Cleland National Park to learn about the Adelaide Hills’ indigenous history. The Yurridla Trail unlocks 40,000 years of stories from the Permangk people, the region’s original inhabitants.
Parks and gardens
Many Adelaide Hills’ towns are part of the Mount Lofty Open Garden Scheme, which captures the diversity of the region’s plant life.
The stunning Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens are a perennial highlight. The gardens are spread across seven valleys and are easily accessible by walking trails. Immerse yourself in 97 hectares of native flowers, ferns and fragrant roses.
There is also Wairoa, the Adelaide Hills’ last remaining intact Victorian pleasure garden (a garden with entertainment that is open to the public).
