Picture perfect
With its lush hills and picture postcard views, the stunning Fleurieu Peninsula scenery has inspired many people to build their life here.
Many have turned that inspiration into art, as you’ll see at the galleries and museums scattered around the region.
Some of the art is so good it has attracted national attention and helped create some important art events.
The Fleurieu Art Prize is the world’s largest landscape art prize. It’s worth $50,000 to the winner. Held every two years in November, it’s a key part of the Fleurieu Biennale, which has grown into a big national arts event.
The Biennale also has four other prize categories, with pieces on display in selected McLaren Vale wineries.
Art imitating life
Artists will be trying to win the “food and wine”, “peninsula vistas” and “peninsula water” categories. There’s also a youth scholarship award. The winner of each category picks up $10,000.
The Biennale recognises Fleurieu Peninsula life for what it is; food, wine, spectacular views and the magnificent coastline.
Join the festivities
The Fleurieu Art Prize isn’t the region’s only big art event. The Victor Harbor Rotary Club Art Show is the second largest outdoor art exhibition in South Australia. Held in January, there’s also a big cash prize. Just like the Fleurieu Art Prize, it attracts plenty of interest from around the country.
The region also takes part in the South Australian Living Arts Festival. It’s a massive festival which gives local artists exposure they rarely get.
SALA takes place every August in hundreds of galleries, wineries, cafes, restaurants and “creative spaces” across the state. There are more than 60 galleries around the Fleurieu, so make sure you visit the SALA website to find out which ones are taking part.
