Fleurieu Peninsula Beaches
Bring your towel and bathers
The Fleurieu Peninsula’s beaches are stunning. Driving along you’ll find hidden coves, pounding surf, reefs and sunken ships that lure divers.
Lay back on the sand and let the sun lull you with its warmth. There’s no reason to move. Listen to the waves crash and the children play.
Most beaches have cafés and restaurants nearby. Treat yourself, choose something modern and cooked by a renowned chef. Live your childhood again and munch hot fish and chips on the lawns under the shade of a wide, sprawling tree.
Take your pick
Bury your toes in the long stretch of sand at Goolwa. Hunt for cockles (pippies) the way the Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal people did for thousands of years. Drive into the wide, painted landscape that is Aldinga and setup camp for the day. The beaches are varied, each one special, each one beautiful.
Middleton is one of the best surf beaches in the country. Learn the art of clambering onto a board. Catch a wave before falling into the salty water, then jump back up to do it all again.
A wild coastline
One of the Fleurieu Peninsula’s true jewels is Waitpinga Beach. When you see it for the first time, it will take your breath away. If you’re feeling lucky, take a surf rod and see if you can hook a salmon or mullet. While Waitpinga Beach is perfect for stunning photos, do not surf here unless you are a very experienced surfer. There are dangerous rips, strong currents and big waves. It is not patrolled by surf lifesavers.
Family fun
Horseshoe Bay at Port Elliot is a favourite with families but there’s still enough wave action here to take out a boogie board or teach the kids how to body surf. Pods of dolphins often visit to see what the humans are up to. Walk along the stretch of sand, right to the very end and feel like you’re the only person in this paradise.
