Flinders Ranges and Outback Attractions

Wilpena Pound

It’s easy to understand why some people travel to the north of South Australia, just to see Wilpena Pound. This natural basin in the Flinders Ranges has some of the best hiking trails, bush walks and four wheel drive (4WD) experiences in the country.

Lake Eyre, South Australia

Lake Eyre, draws thousands of people to its shores when it fills with water. This is a rare occurrence. The regeneration is extraordinary and it’s an amazing sight to see the countryside come out of hibernation.

Noodle for opals

There’s something about opals that is so seductive. Many people spend their lives trying to find that perfect piece. Noodling (searching) for opals in the lunar landscape of Coober Pedy is a highlight. Stay in an underground house while you are there to escape the heat. It’s a unique experience.

It’s hard to say what the best attraction is. It could be the deserted homestead ruins, with desert winds whipping through. Small towns act as gateways to great camping sites and spectacular scenery.

Expect the unexpected

Take a steam powered ride on the historic Pichi Richi Railway from Quorn. Enjoy the sound and light shows at the Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre and the Blinman Mine. Hike through the rocky pathways and clear tricking water of Alligator Gorge. Drink beer at the iconic William Creek Hotel or Mungerannie Hotel.

Visit the Wadlata Outback Centre, walk through its Tunnel of Time, the story of an ancient land, its people and treasures Down Under. Through the mouth of Max the giant “Ripper Lizard”, you’ll discover how the region evolved and highlights you shouldn't miss.

Enjoy a Flinders Ranges and Outback South Australian adventure.
