With hundreds of kilometres of off-road cycling trails, you can choose your own adventure. The Flinders Ranges and outback is paradise for keen cyclists. Join flocks of cyclists in the outback for mountain bike trails and events.

At the foot of Mount Remarkable National Park, Melrose is the perfect base. Stay at the holiday units, caravan park, hotel, cottage or blacksmith shop. Exploring is easy, with cycling trails easily accessible from the town centre.

An ancient landscape

Escape to Mount Remarkable’s foothills and cycle through the unique Australian landscape. Look out for kangaroos, wallabies and emus.

Feel the adrenalin rush descending craggy slopes. Ride through the heart of the bush and rest atop its ridges.

See the sun rise over the red sand by joining a Flinders Ranges and outback cycling group. Tours depart at 7am each day from Over the Edge Sports.

Link your cycling adventure with one of the many accommodation options in the region. At the end of the day, rest up in comfort or luxurious surrounds.

If you don't have room for your own bike, you can hire one in most towns within the Flinders Ranges area.

Ride the trails

Carve your way through the scrub on one of the many single-tracks. Get a feel for the Flinders Ranges and outback by starting with the original Melrose mountain bike trail, “Textbook 10%”. For families, the “Showground’s Loop” meanders throughout 100 acres of gums and gullies. It provides great picnic spots, creeks and laughing kookaburras.

The 200 kilometre Flinders Ranges by Bike loop trail is an epic challenge for mountain bikers. Allow four days to complete the whole circuit, riding through a mix of national parks, old pastoral station tracks and part of the Mawson Trail.

Challenge yourself

For a challenge, try “Hellrose”. The cycling track includes a technical climb, big jumps and descent. You’ll find trails graded by difficulty level. Don’t head to the Flinders Ranges and outback without a map of the trails and grades.
