Kangaroo Island Surfing
The wild side
See the wild side of one of South Australia’s two “National Landscapes”. Check out Kangaroo Island from your surfboard.
Kangaroo Island’s dynamic southern coastline is one of surfing’s “best kept secrets”. From gentle swells in sheltered coves, to super-chilled reef and beach breaks all the way from Antarctica, you’ll often have the beach to yourself.
Pick your location
There are five main surf bays here. With a four wheel drive (4WD) and some local knowledge, who knows where you’ll end up?
Vivonne Bay is our surfing jewel. It suits all abilities and is the venue for Kangaroo Island’s first ever professional surfing competition, the Kangaroo Island Pro. Wait for a north or north westerly wind and come and see what you can do with six kilometres of truly stunning beach.
For experienced surfers
The sand banks and rocky points of Hanson Bay suit experienced surfers. It’s “game on” when northerly winds blow in but the fishing is always great.
D’Estress Bay can be impossible to surf. In winter, you may need a four wheel drive (4WD). Get away from the sheltered beach and you’ll have a really swell time.
Popular beaches
Prepare to share at popular Pennington Bay. Even on small wave days, beginners and advanced surfers will find something on the shallow sand banks.
Head to the north coast and Stokes Bay, another “all rounder” beach. Unlike many northern bays, Stokes Bay needs southerly winds to get the best from its reef and beach breaks. If that’s what Mother Nature provides, then you’re in for a treat.
If you can steal some secrets from the locals, you may end up at the mysterious Spot X, in three metre swells at Rockys or under the cliffs at Spooks.
Just remember, always wear a full wetsuit and don’t confuse the sharks by swimming near a seal colony.
Kangaroo Island, surf’s up!
