Murray River Attractions
130 million years
When you’re 130 million years old, you’ve had plenty of time to create some amazing things to see.
History is a very important part of the Murray River but it’s not the only reason to come here. There are native animals, arts and crafts, great food and wine. You'll find something you like and won’t have to move too far from the water.
Living heritage
Two different Aboriginal groups live along the Murray River and today you can still find "canoe trees" that were used to make eucalypt bark fishing boats. Visit Ngaut Ngaut Aboriginal site to find out more.
Early settler history
There are museums dedicated to European settlement. The three beautiful paddle steamers in Mannum and Renmark all date back to the turn of the twentieth century. All three still offer short cruises throughout the year.
Back on dry land, Old Tailem Town Pioneer Village is one of Australia's largest pioneer villages. Twelve streets of memories and more than 90 buildings will take you back “to the old days” and promise an authentic, historic, day out.
Parks and sanctuaries
The Murray River is also home to some fabulous wildlife parks and sanctuaries.
Conservation and sheep grazing blend seamlessly at nearby Saunders Gorge Sanctuary. The amazing Monarto Zoo is a must-see. Take a shuttle bus tour to visit the lions, cheetahs, chimpanzees, giraffes and more.
Go on a cruise past Big Bend – the tallest cliffs along the Murray River. Look out for native wildlife along the river, as you pass Big Bend at night.
Wetlands and horticulture
Green thumbs should head to Ruston's Rose Garden or Bella Lavender Estate for a fragrant experience. Visit the Swanport Wetlands to see how the region might have looked before European settlement.
For an environmentally friendly day trip, head to the Banrock Station Wine and Wetland Centre. Build up an appetite as you explore the three diverse nature walks through the rejuvenated wetlands. Enjoy an award-winning wine with your meal as an added bonus.
