Murray River Driving Trips
The perfect driving holiday
Tourists flock to the Murray River for the water, wildlife and wonderful scenery. Head off-road into one of our national parks and you’ll transform your holiday.
The Mount Rescue Loop in Ngarkat Conservation Park is only a day trip from Tintinara. For some amazing views across the Mallee, it's worth the five kilometre walking detour to Tyms Lookout. Head off on shorter four wheel drive (4WD) adventures at Scorpion Springs, Baan Hill and Box Flat.
For more four wheel drive (4WD) tracks, follow the historic footsteps of Edward White, the first surveyor to mark the South Australia and Victorian border. Take either the Ngarkat Loop track or the appropriately named Big Desert Loop.
For the experienced
Experienced four wheel drive (4WD) travellers should try the demanding Border Track in the Ngarkat Conservation Park. This 29 kilometre, one-way track skirts around the South Australian-Victorian border and covers some rugged land. The spectacular bird life is an amazing reward. The track closes during fire danger season.
Scenic drives
If you’re looking for something a little less rugged, there are many beautiful scenic drives around the Murray River. If you just want to drive without maps, then travelling from town to town is a visual delight.
Nanya's Pad Interpretation Drive is a 100 kilometre circuit, well suited to conventional, two wheel drive vehicles. The Mid-Murraylands Scenic Drive will take you a little longer. This 176 kilometre loop starts in stunning riverside Mannum, heads through Swan Reach, Nildottie, Caurnamont and then across the river at the Purnong ferry.
The Murray River, it’s a driver’s region.
Drive safely
Take care of yourself and the environment when you’re travelling along any of these tracks. The speed limit in our conservation parks is 40 kilometres per hour. If you’re in the sand dunes and thick mallee scrub, stick to the existing wheel ruts, as we don’t want any new tracks. Look out for oncoming vehicles, pedestrians or animals. It’s remote but you’re not alone.
Remember, when you’re driving on sand, reduce your tyre pressure. Bring plenty of supplies, including water and enough fuel. Camp at the marked sites inside. Fees may apply.
