Southern Fleurieu Wine Region
The Southern Fleurieu region is set amongst rolling hills, pastures, national parks and rugged coastlines. Small coastal towns, like Victor Harbor, Normanville and Port Elliot lead you to cosy cellar doors.
The Southern Fleurieu includes Yankalilla, Mount Jagged, Hindmarsh Valley and Victor Harbor. You’ll find excellent Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and more. Cellar doors are open on weekends and many have restaurants.
Great food to match the wines
Cool climate Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay do well here but in a light-bodied style. The real standouts in the best vintages are the medium bodied and spicy Merlot, Pinot Noir and Shiraz Viognier. These are the kind of wines that you want to linger over.
Try Victor Harbor Winery. Its veranda is a lovely spot to have a tipple, maybe a cheese platter? The Mont Rosa restaurant at the winery will satisfy a larger appetite!
The Square Waterhole has a great pizza menu. It’s open weekends and public holidays, though it’s a good idea to phone ahead. Parri Estate will welcome you to their cellar door. They’ve also got one in McLaren Vale.
Mount Jagged will give you a taste or two of their lovely wine. You might also be tempted by local food available at the cellar door. They’re open every day, so there’s no excuse not to stop in.
Historic cottages and sea views
Minko Wines cellar door is a beautiful cottage. It’s a perfect setting for the wholesome meals they’ll serve you. There is usually some dukka and cheese to try with your wine.
On weekends, step out onto the veranda at Carrickalinga Creek Vineyard and Cellar Door. Enjoy the pretty views of Gulf St Vincent.
You will see plenty of vineyards throughout this region. Some don’t offer cellar door tastings but you might be the lucky one that finds a secret cellar door or a chance, exclusive tasting. If you’re unsure, give them a call.
