Take the kids
Taking the kids on a beach trip in South Australia is easy. Most places along the coast are close to a beautiful beach. The thought of fish and chips, sand castles and ice cream will have the kids wriggling with excitement.
Close to Adelaide, visit Glenelg, Henley Beach or Semaphore. Glenelg will delight. A water feature in the centre of the square will amuse kids for hours. Join in the fun or observe from a safe, dry distance with coffee in hand.
The Beach House
Head to the Beach House. It’s a huge, fun-filled arena with waterslides, dodgem cars, a carousel and arcade games.
Henley Beach is a great spot to start or finish a bike ride, with the Linear Trail nearby. The kids might like to catch squid off the jetty, with a little bit of help from the grown-ups.
Perhaps digging for cockles or hunting for periwinkles is on the agenda? You’ll find rock crabs in protected coves and exposed wading pools when the tide goes out.
City beaches
Brighton Beach is further south along the coast and is popular with families. Jetty Road at Brighton is full of cafés and you will find plenty serving fish and chips. In February, the Brighton Jetty Classic swimming competition is on. This popular event attracts many swimmers to the beach.
Kids can enter for fun, while serious swimmers can compete for prize money. Check out the Brighton Jetty Classic Sculptures while you are there. See the colourful artworks on display by the beach. Choose your favourite artwork for the People’s Choice Award.
Surf beaches
If you’ve got teenagers, they’ll probably be interested in skimboarding or bodyboarding. Great beaches along the Fleurieu Peninsula will sort them out! Try Middleton or Port Elliot. Horseshoe Bay at Port Elliot is a favourite with families.
Stay safe. Remember to swim at beaches patrolled by Surf Lifesavers. Always swim between the red and yellow flags.
