Wine Tasting - Riesling Trail
Clare Valley is a place where 'wine and food' means people. It's a region with a world-beating wine-list. Aptly
named after the region's most recognised wine style, the Riesling Trail runs between Auburn and Clare. The old railway line is a fantastic way to see the Clare Valley and links many of the regions boutique wineries and townships. The 16 mile trail is suitable for walking and cycling for users of all ages and experience. Here you can watch master vignerons at work in 150-year old cellars and enjoy festivals among the vines. There are about 40 cellar doors and a number have good dining.
Sevenhill Cellars
Experience the unique history of the Clare Valley's oldest winery and vineyard, originally built to manufacture sacramental wine for religious use. Wander through the old cellars, St Aloysius Church and fascinating crypt at the complex at Sevenhill Cellars. To get a real feel for the winery, take a detailed tour with Br
other John May.
Martindale Hall
Visit the village of Mintaro, listed as a State Heritage Area and the boyhood home of the famous Australian poet, CJ Dennis. Nearby is the magnificent Martindale Hall, the 'star' of the much-loved film Picnic at Hanging Rock. You can stay overnight in the 19th century Georgian mansion to experience the ambience of a bygone era.
Fishing, Surfing & Diving
Yorke Peninsula's waters provide some of the best fishing, surfing and diving in South Australia. It doesn't matter whether you're experienced or a novice, there's some great action to be had from boat, shore and jetty. The southwest corner boasts numerous surfing spots ranging from fast, hollow beach breaks to powerful reef set-ups. And the Peninsula is one of South Australia's key diving area
s, with dive trails and shipwrecks waiting to be explored. If you don't have your own boat, charter operators are available from many of the coastal towns.
Shipwreck Trails
Submerge yourself in maritime history on the two heritage shipwreck trails. The Wardang Island Maritime Heritage Trail has eight shipwrecks within 10 nautical miles of each other. A waterproof booklet is available for use underwater and plaques are located at each of the shipwrecks; while the Investigator Strait Maritime Heritage Trail (between Yorke Peninsula and Kangaroo Island) highlights 10 vessels and has a waterproof booklet and six land-based interpretive signs on the southern coast.
